He spent his early years helping his father work the land and livestock on the family farm. In 1943 Alfred joined the United States Army and proudly served his country as a Combat MP during World War II. On June 3, 1944 he married the love of his life, Ella Massirer. They relocated to Austin in 1948 where Alfred went to work for Allied Van Lines where he worked for over 20 years. During his time with Allied he received numerous safe driving recognition awards. After retiring from Allied Van Lines, Alfred went to work driving a school bus for the Lake Travis Independent School District.
In his free time Alfred enjoyed camping, woodworking, playing dominos and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He and Ella loved to go dancing, attending their grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with family. They were active members of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church and then later at Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, John and Malinda Symank; his beloved wife of 67 years, Ella Symank; his brother, Ervin Symank and his sister, Ida Massirer. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Shirlie Bazemore, Alvin Symank, Margaret Pogue and Linda Kay; 8 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2020 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home with burial following at Cook-Walden/Memorial Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert L. Bazemore, III, Riley Bazemore, John J. Gehring, J.T. Kay, Michael A. Kay, and Jason Pogue.
