Bertha Alicia Templeton- to some she was…. Alicia Delgado, Alicia Ruiz, Alicia Reyes, Alice, Mom, mother, sis, daughter, Grandma Alice, her childhood nickname - Dolly, Dagwood (on account of the large Dagwood sandwich she would make) or Iron Butterfly to those of you that remember her late 70’s CB handle.
Alicia was a mother of four and is survived by her son David Ruiz and his daughters, Amber and Skylar; her daughter, Tina Ruiz and partner Damaris Acevedo and her children, Valerie and Ezequiel; her son Allen Ruiz and partner Heath Smith; and her son Frank Reyes and wife Michelle and their children, Zachary, Cameron and Riley. She is also survived by three brothers, three sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Alicia was preceded in death by her mom, Bertha Alicia Ochoa, her step-dad, Domingo Ochoa, her brother, Carlos Delgado and her granddaughter, Makenna Reyes.
Alicia was a tenacious woman. She sacrificed her youth and as a very young mother, she did what was necessary to guarantee her children would not have to struggle as she did. She was proud of her accomplishments and the end results of the woman and men that she raised. If you asked about her children you better believe she would take that opportunity to gloat and express the pride she felt. She did her job as a mother here on earth and we know that she will continue watch over them as a mother’s job is never done.
Alicia was also very family-oriented. As the matriarch of the original “Modern Family,” she made an effort to reach out to all members of the family. She affected the lives around her in such a way that she will continue to live in our hearts and in our actions.
Alicia was an adventurer and pioneer. Early in life she ventured out to California where she lived during her first marriage before returning home Texas. Life’s experiences would take her to Washington State, Oklahoma and then back to Texas where she would eventually settle down to finish raising her four children and where she would meet her life partner and husband, Robert Overcash.
Alicia was a generous person, and although she had little to give financially, she would always go out of her way to thoughtfully offer small tokens whenever possible. When Alicia discovered something that someone she cared about liked, she wouldn’t forget it. You could be assured that if it was in her power, she would get it for you just to see the smile on your face!
Alicia was strong-willed, courageous and a force to be reckoned with. She was a hard worker, and in early years as a single mom held as many as three jobs at one time. At 63, she was still working and doing her best to make ends meet. This attitude and spirit would win her the respect of all around her.
Some of Alicia’s passions were dancing, fishing, family brunch and walking. She loved a good drink and she might have even enjoyed slipping a coin into a slot machine on occasion.
We know you are looking down on us now and asking us not to grieve but to celebrate your life accomplishments. It is with a heavy hearts that we lovingly, respectfully and reluctantly deliver you into the hands of God and bid a final farewell to a wonderful woman. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will live on in our hearts and our stories for generations to come.
