

Born in Zaragoza, Spain, on September 14, 1933, and after spending time in Rome, London, and Madrid, he came to the United States in 1967 as a Fulbright Scholar to teach Spanish language, culture, and literature. He met his wife, Adelaida López, in the summer of 1968 at the University of Texas in Austin. They were married in Riobamba, Ecuador, on June 11, 1969. After more than four decades in academia, he retired from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as Professor Emirtus.
Preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and two brothers, he is survived by his wife, his son Javier Martínez, his daughter-in-law Kristina Neal de Martínez, and many other loving relatives in Spain, Ecuador, and the United States.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2011, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home (14501 North IH 35) in Pflugerville, Texas. Funeral services and interment will take place on Monday, May 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mausoleum Chapel and Cemetery of Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Pflugerville.
