Carolina Mendez, 44, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving husband and family, on November 11, 2012 after a valiant year-long battle with breast cancer. She fought with grace, courage, humor, and never wavered in her determination that she would defeat the illness. An Austin resident of over 20 years, Carolina Ortiz was born to Maria Esperanza Guerra-Ortiz and Felix Ortiz-Mendoza on October 4, 1968 in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico. She worked at several companies during her life in Austin, and spent many years with La Quinta and Flextronics.
Carolina’s world revolved around her beloved family, her many friends and her three cherished cats. She was a devoted wife, and a loving, proud and supportive mother; always putting her children’s needs before her own. She had a truly warm and generous spirit, and always helped anyone in need without hesitation and asked nothing in return. Her love of dolphins, butterflies and flowers were boundless and she found true joy in the beauty of God’s creations.
Carolina is survived by her loving husband, J.R. Mendez of Austin; son, Cpl. Harry Mendez, USMC, stationed in Jacksonville, NC; daughter, Maricely Feliciano; son, Ezekiel Mendez; son, Sebastian Mendez; and daughter, Isabella Mendez, all of Austin. She is also survived by her mother, Maria Esperanza Guerra-Ortiz; sisters, Maria Esther Ortiz-Guerra and Maria Esperanza Ortiz-Guerra; and brothers, Francisco Javier Ortiz-Guerra, Baldomero Ortiz-Guerra, and Jose Angel Ortiz-Guerra, all of Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico. She is preceded in death by her father, Felix Ortiz-Mendoza.
Her family would like to thank our extended family, especially J.R.’s sisters, Stella Legando and Suzanna Lee, for their selfless support and love during our time of need. We also wish to express our eternal gratitude to Carolina’s friends and coworkers at La Quinta and Flextronics, and J.R’s at Dell, for their infinite support, patience and understanding during the past year. Lastly, we would like to express our sincere appreciation and thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Texas Oncology and Round Rock Medical Center for their wonderful care, warmth and support during her treatment.
The family will greet guests at a visitation held on Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Capital Parks in Pflugerville, Texas. A service to honor Carolina’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2012, also at Cook-Walden Capital Parks. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.
Memorial gifts to honor Carolina may be made to the American Cancer Society in her name.
