On March 20, 1985, God blessed Darrell and Yvonne McKnight with a bouncing baby boy. We named him David Curtis McKnight. David attended Kindergarten and first grade in the Galena Park ISD, and second grade in the Houston ISD. In 1993, the family relocated to Austin, Texas where he attended Boone Elementary, Covington Middle School, and David Crockett High School. Upon graduation from high school in 2003, he attended Prairie View A&M University and Texas State University, respectively. God gave him two special gifts, mathematics and music. His parents hoped that he would become an engineer like his sister. However, it was his love of music that won the battle of the two gifts. His parents, as they always did, gave him their support and encouragement. Beginning in elementary school, he mastered the piano and keyboard and began playing his sister’s saxophone. By the time he completed high school, it was easy to see that his love of music was more than just a passing hobby.
David’s first taste of playing with talented musicians was as a member of the Mount Sinai Baptist Church musicians. They took David under their wing and encouraged his growth. He played in several bands in the Austin area, including Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears, Sheer Khan and the Space Case, and Mama K and the Shades. He made quite a name for himself and was a well-known musician in the central Texas area.
David accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Sinai by Pastor A.W. Anthony Mays. He loved his pastor and his church family. Most of all, he loved the Lord and that is why his family is at peace today. We are hurting because of the disconnection but we are rejoicing because of the salvation!
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Willie and Lou Ollie Chambers, Napoleon and Rachel Frater; paternal grandfather, J.T. McKnight; Uncle, William Earl Chambers, and Aunt Mae Francis Linder.
David leaves to hold and cherish his memories his father and wife, Darrell Curtis McKnight and Kim Houston McKnight; mother, Yvonne Reneda Chambers; sister, Pamela Stockland and husband, Bryan Stockland; nephew, Wesley; Aunts, Patsye Chandler (James), Joyce, and Mary Louise; Uncles Tommy (Sandra), Willie Fred (Ann), Raymond (Renee), and Joseph (Brenda); great-aunt, Margaret Hogan; and grandmother, Ruby McKnight. He also leaves a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
The family will receive guests Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home.
