Derrick was born on February 15, 1970, to George and Margaret Hobbs, Sr. in Jacksonville, North Carolina. After proudly graduating from Encinal High School in 1988, “Go Jets!”, he went on to study at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California for a couple of years and then proceeded to enlist in the United States Army.
Shortly after his military career began, he met the first love of his life, Pilar Ann Reyes, in Austin, Texas where they were married on January 26th, 1995. Derrick served our country for a total of 17 years between Active Duty (8.5 years), Army Reserves, and the National Guard. When Derrick came off active duty, he accepted a position with the Texas Department of Public Safety - Austin serving recently as an OIC Systems Analyst, he was with them for 21 years. Derrick realized he wanted more for himself and those around him, so he obtained a bachelor’s degree and master’s in Information Technology and Information Systems from the University of Phoenix.
Derrick had many passions in life including his family (and dogs), his church, his love for technology and cars, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, what he admired the most was the second love of his life, his beautiful daughter, Marcella Margaret Hobbs. The bond between Derrick and Marcella could be seen from the moon, and she’ll always be daddy’s little girl.
He was survived by his wife Pilar; his daughter Marcella; his parents George and Margaret Hobbs, Sr.; his brothers George (Jill) Hobbs, Jr., and Michael Hobbs; his nephews George Hobbs, III and Spencer Hobbs; and his mother-in-law, Camie Flowers.
A memorial service will be held at Bridge Church, 741 County Road 138, Hutto, TX on Saturday, March 25th, 2023, at 11:00 AM with a reception immediately following the service to celebrate Derrick’s life.
The family requests that flowers and notes are sent to Pilar Hobbs at 122 Meadowside Drive, Hutto, TX 78634. Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in Derrick’s memory to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (https://themmrf.org).
