

He was married to Ruth Phelps on May 1, 1964. Don retired from the State of Texas. Over the span of 35 years, he worked with the Highway Department, the Parks and Wildlife Department, and the General Services Commission.
Don had a passion for anything outdoors. Hunting, boating and fishing were among his favorite activities early in his life. Most summers were spent on the lake with his family and friends swimming, fishing, and water skiing. He loved animals, gardening, photography, and provided food, shelter, and love for any stray animal that found its way into his life.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Phelps and Theodora Moon Phelps; his brother Douglas Phelps; sisters, Natalie Roseland and Nancy Smith; and great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Reyna.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 52 years, Ruth Phelps; son David Phelps and his wife Debbie; daughter Vicki Phelps; and daughter Kristi Delaney and husband Robert. He is also survived by his sister, Bobbie Connell of Fredericksburg, TX; brother, Virgil Phelps and wife Gloria of San Antonio, TX; and sister, Cheryl Steaples and husband Don of Austin, TX. Don Kirby is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert Reyna, Tristan Parker and husband Nelson, Erika Mancias and husband Ryan, Kirby Phelps, Zachary Delaney, Heather Ueckert and husband Matt of Belton, TX. His great grandchildren include Braxton Parker, Addison Parker, Brayden Mancias, Major Ueckert and Lindsie Ueckert, as well as other extended family and friends.
A special thanks for all the doctors and nurses, including those at St. David's North Austin Medical Center, who provided loving care for Don Kirby over the last nine months.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Dell Children’s Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville.
