Dorothy Marie Cottrell Hearin, age 92, went to be with the Lord around 10:30 pm on May 16, 2025 in Round Rock, Texas, surrounded by the loving memories, songs, conversations and prayers that lingered in the night air from family visits over a period of several hours that last day.
Born in Wanette, Oklahoma, April 30, 1933, she was the oldest girl out of five children. Dorothy graduated high school in Shawnee, Oklahoma and later in life, she earned an Associate Degree in Science from Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. She married Coy Hearin when she was 17 and he was 20. They moved to California when he joined the Navy, where their first child, Linda, was born. When Coy's time in the Navy was finished, they moved back to Oklahoma, where their second child, Larry, was born just a year and six days after Linda. Their next move took them to Texas, where their third child, Lou Ann, was born eight years later.
In addition to being a wife and mother of three, Dorothy held many jobs during her life that ran the gamut from telephone operator through secretarial positions for a city manager, a junior high principal and she was a bookkeeper for a pharmacy. She was even an assistant girl's PE teacher at the junior high before she became the secretary to the principal there.
Dorothy lived in many different places in Texas from East Texas to West Texas and from South Texas to Central Texas. In every place she lived, she was a faithful and active church member, who could do whatever was needed, from singing in the choir to working with the children in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, to being active in WMU, because she had a heart for missionaries and the work they do. She enjoyed doing creative activities with friends and family like making her own artificial flowers, decoupage and sewing. She loved birds and flowers. She also loved reading and learning new things, and watching game shows from “To Tell The Truth” to “Jeopardy”.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Richard E. and Ora May (Wofford) Cottrell, brother E.C. “Corky” Cottrell, and sisters Elva Newell and Bobbie Helen Beck. She is survived by her, husband of nearly 75 years, Coy G. Hearin, daughter Linda Sue Staph (Dana), son Larry (Deb) and daughter Lou Ann Hogan (Mike), and younger sister Eva Ward, who joined her in heaven eight days later.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Rachel Marie Busbee (Collin), James Hearin, Caleb “Gene” Staph, Austin Hogan (Autumn), Callie McDonald (Jordan), Hunter Hogan and Lauralyn Crow (Asa). Dorothy was also blessed to have four great-grandchildren; Juliette, James, Ben, and Preston.
She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends, but we are comforted by the knowledge that we will see her again in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kirabo Ministries. Donations can be made through their website at http://kiraboministries.org/give-now/ or by contacting Frank Hamilton at 512-771-0681.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, June 28, 2025 in the First Baptist Church Pflugerville, 306 10th St, Pflugerville, TX 78660.
