Born on December 11, 1927, Dorothy was delivered by her grandmother at her family’s farmhouse in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. As the oldest of four children, she attended St. Joseph’s Academy boarding school in Forget, Saskatchewan alongside her siblings. She graduated high school at Weyburn Collegiate in 1944 at the age of 16. Unable to pursue her plan to enter the nursing field until the age of 18, Dorothy took a typing course and worked as a secretary for a local wholesale grocer. She went on to become a registered nurse graduating from the Ontario Schools of Nursing in 1951.
In 1955, while working as a nurse in Newark, New Jersey, Dorothy met “her Joe” on an initially disastrous blind double date; his Louisiana charm quickly won her over. Joe was in the U.S. Army and soon to be deployed to Japan. They became engaged and exchanged many letters over his deployment. They were finally married on June 28, 1956, in Weyburn – a marriage that would last 61 years.
Dorothy and Joe moved to Austin, Texas, where they had a son, Mikel, and a daughter, Kim. Dorothy spent most of her nursing career working at Seton Hospital Medical Center. Initially the supervisor of Obstetrical Department, she later developed and became Coordinator of the following Departments: Inservice Education, Continuing Care, Utilization Review, and Quality Assurance. She remained the QA coordinator until her retirement.
Her predominant passions included crocheting, collecting stamps and coins, family genealogy, gardening, beating family at games, and volunteering at church. At the St. Thomas More and St. Vincent DePaul parishes, she was fondly referred to as “The Plant Lady”, as she would propagate plants to sell at church festivals. She donated hundreds of lovingly crocheted baby blankets to hospitals in her retirement years.
Dorothy was a generous person with both her time and cheer, quick to smile at others and laugh at herself. She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and affectionate great-grandmother. She was devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mary our Blessed Mother, the Holy Family and to the care of mothers and infants.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Joe” Honovich; her parents, Jake and Barbara Probe; brother, Donald Probe; sister, Isabel Bishop; and sister, Jean Neddow.
Left to treasure her memory are her children, Mikel Honovich, and Kim Moore with her husband Bill; her grandchildren, Lauren Honovich, Will Moore and wife Anna, Michael Moore and wife Taylor, Tom Moore, Angela Block and husband Steven, and Katie Jurkoic and husband Michael; and her seven great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Michael, Matthew, Miles, Mark, Maximilian, and Evelyn.
