Dorothy Mae McCutcheon was born on February 15, 1925 in Thrall, Texas to parents Leon and Annie Schlickeisen. She was blessed with many seasons throughout her life. Following a recent decline in health, our beautiful and sweet mother passed away on October 5, 2017.
Dorothy attended school in Thrall. Her first day of school, she left in the middle of the day, and made her one mile journey to their home where she informed her mom that she didn't like school, and wasn't going back. She was sent back to school the next day. She graduated from Thrall High School at the age of sixteen. Over her long lifetime, she worked various jobs and retired from DPS after 23 years and 9 months of service.
She lived in the Taylor area where she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 2008 she moved to Pflugerville to be closer to her family.
She learned to play Canasta at the age of 90. Subsequently, she taught (or attempted to teach some of her children) and their spouses the rules of the game. But, she sometimes changed the rules when playing! She was very competitive but gracious when she lost and encouraging to other players who hadn’t played well. She was a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs; she didn’t hold back when yelling for them!
Throughout her life, she loved to read books, create beautiful needlepoint coasters, work jigsaw puzzles, do crossword puzzles and word jumbles, play games at the P'ville Senior Center, visit with family and friends, eat out frequently (especially Mexican and Chinese food), watched TV programs such as Catch 21, Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune and Molly Bee Polka.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Willis McCutcheon, sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Bud Tyll, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Genelle Schlickeisen, brothers Wallace, Edgar and Cleo Schlickeisen, and niece Karyn Tyll.
She is survived by her children Harold Grabs (Donna Rae), Joyce Gregory (Ken), Donna Matthews (Preston) and Kathy Rankin (Randell), sister-in-law (Ruth Schlickeisen), fourteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and special friends (Jen, Lee, Helen, Jutta, Lavern). She loved her family and friends immensely.
She was first our mom and then our friend. We had fun times together and will miss her greatly!!
Private graveside services will be held at Hutto City Cemetery.
