Carol Elizabeth, Betsy was born in Memphis Tennessee to Austin Martin and Caro Elizabeth Martin. She was raised in Memphis as the baby to twelve older siblings. Betsy graduated from Whitehaven High School where she met her future husband, Charlie Garner Stewart. Betsy went right to work at the family business, A. S. Martin and Sons as an executive assistant. She stayed there and waited for Charlie to graduate from Memphis State University after serving in the United States Army during World War II. Betsy and Charlie married in 1950 and their first child Paula was born soon after. They lived in Memphis until 1972 when they moved to Austin, Texas. Betsy, always the life of the party, was fast to make friends and busy settling four kids into schools and jobs. She was active in civic groups, volunteering with disabled children and Meals on Wheels for many years. Betsy, Charlie, and the family enjoyed many deep friendships made through their involvement in the Balcones Country Club neighborhood and community. Betsy loved her church and church family. She and Charlie were founding members of Hope Presbyterian Church where Betsy later became a Deacon.
Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, her twelve siblings and the love of her life Charlie Stewart. She was also preceded in death by her sister-in-law (Charlie’s sister) and brother-in-law, Jane and George Swanton who were so special to her and Charlie.
