

Elmo John Miertschin, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away at his home on Friday, June 13, 2025, he was 87. He was born November 23, 1937 in Giddings, Texas to Emil and Ella (Jurk) Miertschin. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin, Texas through 8th grade, then he graduated from Giddings High School in 1956, and later graduated from Durham’s Business School in Austin, Texas. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church since December 1961, serving on the Board of Elders, Stewardship Committee, Board of Trustees, Building Committee and the Chairman of the Congregation. He also sang in the choir. He was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith April 6, 1952 by Rev. A. Arndt and his confirmation verse is Romans 5:1. He married Frances Marie Kappler on June 14, 1959 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas. After 39 years of service he retired from the City of Austin Electric Department as Supervisor of Consumer Services. In addition to hunting, fishing (Back Bay Speckled Trout and Redfish Club), playing dominoes and watching any activities his grandchildren were involved in and he was affectionately known as “Gramps” to them. He coached his sons little league baseball and soccer teams; additionally he loved gardening and working in his yard.
Elmo is survived by his wife, Frances (Kappler) Miertschin; children, Timothy John Miertschin and wife, Diane; Thomas Layne Miertschin and wife, Deanna; grandchildren, Christopher James Miertschin; Katie Renae Atnip and husband, Jason; McKayla Miertschin and Ethan Miertschin; great-grandchildren, Landon Atnip, Sadie Atnip and Halle Atnip along with his sister, Mary Ann Becker and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Emil and Ella Miertschin; son, Todd Alan Miertschin; twin brother, Louis Miertschin; sister-in-law, Alice Miertschin; and brother-in-law, Fred Becker.
Funeral services will be held 10:30am, Friday, June 20, 2025 at Hope Lutheran Church with visitation being held Thursday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Cook Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Atnip, Gary Becker, Michael Becker, Virgil Becker, Russell Kappler, Chris Miertschin, Ethan Miertschin and Carl Repp with Katie Atnip, Landon Atnip, Sadie Atnip, Halle Atnip and McKayla Miertschin serving as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or to the Austin Food Bank in Elmo’s memory.
