He leaves his wife of 46 years, Peggy (Kaderka) McArthur; his son, Scott McArthur, and his wife, Stephanie McArthur; his son, Stuart McArthur and his wife Bianca McArthur; his son, Sean McArthur and his wife, Lee Webb; his brother, Ross McArthur and his wife Nancy McArthur; three grandchildren; and many other friends and family.
Born in Windsor, Canada, and raised in Detroit, the son of Mitchell and Dorothy (Steward) McArthur, he became a permanent resident of Austin following his college graduation.
In his early years, Gary was an avid model toy builder and water skier. After graduating from Lincoln Park High School in 1964, he attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He met his wife, Peggy McArthur, during a scuba-diving club meeting while attending university, and they were married in 1973 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Austin. In 1974, he joined the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as an environmental engineer in the "smokestacks" unit with a focus on air permitting to protect and restore air quality in Texas.
After a distinguished 34-year career with TCEQ, Gary retired in 2008. Over the following years, he enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels, working with Mended Hearts to support heart patients in the hospital, and mentoring elementary children in the Lunch Buddies program. Gary had a passion for watersports, the great outdoors, running the Capital 10K, Longhorn sports, and helping those less fortunate.
Please make any contributions in memory of Gary to the Texas Alliance for Life (texasallianceforlife.org/give/).
