Grace Nonee Hudgins Bass, 90, of Round Rock, Texas, departed this life to be with her LORD and Savior on January 26, 2024. She was born to Marshall Hudgins and Juanita Ruth Wilkerson Hudgins in Thomastown, Mississippi on December 28, 1933, and recently celebrated her 90th Birthday!
Grace Nonee is survived by her Husband of 64 years, John Thomas Bass (97), married in Houston, Texas on April 29, 1960. She is also survived by her son, Randell Craig Tedford and Wife Diane, and by her daughter Melissa Ruth Hill (husband Bob Hill, deceased.) Her daughter Dareria Lynne Combs preceded her in death on April 8, 2018. Nonee has seven grandchildren: John Hill, Audrey Grace Hill Campbell, Duane Tedford, Sean Tedford, Daniel Gilara, Jennifer Gilara and Elizabeth Gilara. She was blessed with nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild!
Nonee grew up loving and memorizing the Holy Scriptures, which she often relayed to others in the course of her daily life. Some of her fondest memories were the daily devotionals led by her grandfather, Pastor Thomas Wade Wilkerson, as they sat around the fireplace reading the Bible and praying together. She once wrote that “Grandpa taught us well” and “I’m so thankful for my Christian heritage.”
Grace Nonee dearly loved her mother Ruth and referred to her as the most influential person in her life. Her two sisters, Sarah Byrd and Mary Partain were also dearly cherished. Every summer vacation destination was Mississippi, which involved a lot of visiting, a little fishing, and shelling lots of purple hull peas! She would always comment on her love for her family, the beauty of Mississippi and the joy it brought her.
Grace Nonee dedicated her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She selflessly devoted her love, time and energy to her family and home. Mealtimes were an especially wonderful time for family as she was an excellent cook! She could fry the best chicken (and anything else she could find) and make every kind of gravy imaginable! There were always fresh vegetables and often a good skillet of cornbread. Church was always a big part of family life which instilled in her children and grandchildren the blessings that come from loving, worshipping and serving the LORD.
Gardening was another passion, as she was often found working in the gardens on her flowers and vegetables. She and John cultivated a large vegetable garden and provided food for their table always. They were members of the Rose Society and entered her roses, winning ribbons for best in show. This brought her much joy. Grace was also an avid crossword puzzle solver and with her impressive vocabulary, she could usually answer all the questions (although John helped fill in the gaps at times!)
Grace Nonee’s greatest desire in life was to see all her family know and accept Jesus as their personal LORD and Savior.
Grace Nonee Hudgins Bass, you have been an integral part of our lives and will be fondly in our hearts forever.
“We were taught at an early age that we were to obey God rather than man and to study to show ourselves approved workmen unto God that needeth not be ashamed and that we were saved by God’s grace and not of works lest any man should boast.”
