Herman Judson Stieferman - beloved husband, father, step-grandfather and friend - peacefully passed in his sleep at home in Pflugerville, TX on Sunday, November 6, 2022. After a short illness and hospitalization, he came home with the support of Hospice Austin and passed peacefully with his wife, Dana, and son Scott, at his side. Herman was born on February 1, 1944 in San Antonio. He graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, as did his mother, Mignon Edwards Stieferman, before him.
A gentle giant of a man, at 6’8”, Herman was totally devoted to his family, friends, and business associates. Any beach was a good place to be for Herman, especially the Corpus/Port Aransas area where he spent many summers while growing up. He and Dana Honeymooned there and they later spent many vacations there with Scott and anyone else who wanted to go along. It was a quick trip to get there, but he also enjoyed time in the Fort Walton Beach, Fl. area. After a lifetime interest in trains, he enjoyed collecting Lionel trains, accessories, and memorabilia.
When Alamo Bookstore of San Antonio expanded to Austin, Herman moved there in 1967 and managed the store on Congress Avenue for about ten years. He eventually went into the water conditioning business with Continental Water and Sweetwater Home Services, selling both commercial and residential systems over a 40-year period in the Central Texas area. After his first retirement, he went back to Sweetwater as a consultant working with salespeople and helping with customers’ questions or special needs. He retired a second time on September 4, 2022.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Herman A. Stieferman and Mignon Edwards Stieferman, and by his sister, Cherie Stieferman Buffington, all of San Antonio, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Dana Hammen Stieferman, and their son, Scott Judson Stieferman, and Scott’s three step-children: Bayleigh Sells, and Shelby Sells all of Cedar Park, Tx and Bryce Sells of Pflugerville Tx; he is also survived by his sister’s three sons, Nephews James Buffington and wife, Marilyn, Oscar Buffington and wife, Janice, and Louis Buffington and wife, Gina all of the Dallas, Tx area and their children and grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived Dana’s siblings and many nieces and nephews through them. Herman is also survived by his old Jr. High and lifelong friend, Ron Smith and his wife, Bitsy, of San Antonio. Last but not least, Herman leaves behind his grand fur babies, Sophie and Tyler, who are still wondering around the house; especially his office, looking for him and at least seven more treats...
We would like to acknowledge the considerable gentleness, care, advice, and encouragement that Austin Hospice Nurses and CNAs provided to Herman and his family during his last few weeks at home.
