Hollis was born in Big Spring, Texas on June 5, 1936 to Ella Odom Lloyd and Joseph Hollis Lloyd, Sr. His six older siblings dubbed him “Dooner”, a loving nickname that stayed with him to this day. He grew up in Robert Lee, Texas, graduated Robert Lee High School, and then Texas Tech University in 1958 – Guns Up! During college he met Barbara Gay Russell, the love of his life, and they were married on July 5, 1957. They started their family and moved away from Lubbock, finally settling in Austin where they raised their four children, Quin, Chari, Dawn and Patrice.
Although he worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, his real passion was people; he poured out his life like an offering, first to Barbara and their children, to extended family, and to whomever next walked in his door. He was a father, brother and friend to all who knew him.
Retirement wasn’t a destination for Hollis, it was just the next step in a sequence of journeys. He was a life-long learner and was always preparing for the next adventure with Barbara, whether in local politics, counseling marriages, or serving at church. He was active in their local precinct, was very involved with Family Dynamics Institute courses and Family Life conferences, and was a faithful servant and member at Austin Cornerstone Church.
Hollis was in Austin when he went home to be with Jesus on May 20, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents and his five brothers, Alton, Bud, Earnest, Horrace and James Bostick.
Hollis is survived by his wife Barbara Russell Lloyd; his son Hollis Quinton Lloyd and his wife Pam; daughter Charilene Johnson and her husband Larry; daughter Dawn Marie McNutt and her husband Jeff; daughter Patrice Tene’ Lloyd; his one and only sister Ella Bostick Cox, “Sis”, and her husband Jay. He is Popaw, Papa and Papa Dooner to his six grandsons and five great grandchildren, and just Dooner to numerous nieces and nephews. To other family and friends - and all those he adopted along the way - he was simply Hollis.
Six of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren carry his name forward: Hollis Quinton, Jason Taylor Lloyd, Jonathan Joseph, Blake Joseph, Hollis Samuel & Tucker Hollis. For all those who love & admire him and aspire to love like him, for all those whose lives he touched, Hollis will be supremely missed.
Well done, Hollis, you have loved God and people well and great is your reward!
