On January 6, 1931, our Lord in Heaven blessed the world with the birth of Brother Jack Rollins. He was born in Cleveland, Texas. “Papa Jack” as he was affectionately called by all who knew and loved him was a 1940 graduate of Frederick A. Douglass High School. He married the love of his life, Trellis Haynes Rollins on January 27, 1960, after a two week romance and they enjoyed a 59 year honeymoon.
He served his nation with distinction for 23 years as a member of the United States Air Force and retired in 1974 with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After his military service, he worked for a time at Lyndon B. Johnson High School before embarking on a second career with Motorola, where he received awards for Outstanding Attendance and Team Player. He retired from Motorola in 1994 after 19 years of faithful service.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Austin, Texas for many years before joining the East Nineteenth Street Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor M.C. Walker on February 19, 1995. He served faithfully to the end in numerous ministries including but not limited to the Deacons Ministry, Trustee Board, Finance Committee, Hospitality Committee and the Brotherhood and Men’s Ministry. He also was instrumental in forming the Annual Veteran’s Day Celebration.
He departed this life on Sunday, November 3, 2019. He leaves to cherish the precious memories of his beautiful spirit, his wife of 59 years, Trellis Haynes Rollins; son Joe Rollins (Rita) of Hutton, Texas; son Leroy Rollins (LaNell) of Anderson, South Carolina; daughter Nisia Rollins Murray (Royce “Rusty”) of Roswell, Georgia; daughter - Jacqueline Rollins of Austin, Texas; Grandchildren - Tyrone, Joseph, Brittany, Briana, Drake, Regan, Jaden, Jason, Zaire and Aliyah; ten great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
