

Elder James “Jim” Leroy Ward, age 76 of Austin, Texas passed away Monday, November 15, 2010. Jim was born on December 15, 1933 in Harlingen, Texas. He was the eldest son of Louise Howell Estapa and Sterling Ward and brother of Mary Estapa Gorena and Joseph Jones Estapa Jr.
Jim served in the United States Air Force for over 21 years and retired as a Technical Sergeant. During his Air Force career, he served at numerous locations including overseas assignments in Vietnam, Europe and South Korea and earned the Air Force Commendation Medal. After his retirement from the military, Jim started his own business and was successful for many years.
Jim had a love life with many passions. An avid sportsman, he was a dedicated high school and college baseball umpire and football umpire and loved his Texas Longhorns. A devoted Christian, Jim lived to study and preach the word of God. He was an evangelist who spread the word of God through prison ministries and bible studies. He loved to study and teach the book of Daniel and Revelations. Another one of his passions was music. He was a talented singer who loved many types of music and would often sing hymns at various churches around Central Texas. His favorite types of music were classical, gospel, country, and everything from the Big Band Era. Jim’s special song for his wife Anita was ‘At Last” by Etta James.
Jim also loved and cared deeply for his wife and family. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Anita Rodriquez Ward and ten children: James Russell, Roseanne, Douglas, Joslynn, Geneva, Steven, Avelia, Chris, Jeremy, and James Andrew. Jim is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place on at two o’clock p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Alpha Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 3016 East 51st Street, Austin, Texas 78723. A reception will follow at Shoreline Church located at 15201 Burnet Road, Austin, Texas 78728.
