Joan spent the young years of her life happily playing with her sister Jean and baby brother George. Their mother adored her children and dressed them up often and made costumes for every July 4th parade. Her teenage years were spent living in Los Angeles, California near the beach. She had lots of good friends and times, and became an accomplished ice skater.
On September 19, 1953 she married her sweetheart and soul mate, Harry Earl Tyson, Jr. Joan and Earl had three wonderful sons, Timothy, James and Kim. The boys all excelled in athletics and kept the family busy with sports and Boy Scout activities. In the later years, Joan and Earl traveled to 46 states and loved camping.
Her proudest family moments were her marriage to Earl, the births of each son, the graduation from college of each son, Kim’s marriage to Susan Stueve, the birth of her grandsons, and all of her children’s and grandchildren’s achievements.
Joan was an accomplished Financial Analyst at Educational Testing Services in Princeton, New Jersey. She was a key person in the development of a software system for financial applications at ETS. She chaired the Quality Planning Team for Procurement and developed a proposal for Research and Development software.
She served as PTO President for her sons’ schools, Secretary of the First United Methodist Finance Committee, and a member of the Friends of the Pflugerville Community Library and past President. She worked tirelessly as a Servant Angel for FUMC and helped organize and distribute food at the FUMC Food Pantry. During the last seven years she was a certified ombudsman for the State of Texas and spent many hours acting as a patient advocate in local nursing homes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, and her parents. She is survived by her beloved sons, Tim, of Bristol, PA; Jim, of Bristol, PA; Kim, of Pflugerville, TX; her daughter-in-law, Susan; grandsons Matthew and Nicholas, all from Pflugerville; her sister Jean Uhl Spicer, and her husband Ron from Haverton, PA; her brother George Uhl, and his wife Anita from Downigton, PA. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews, and they will miss her greatly.
The family would especially like to thank The Texas Oncology Doctors and Staff, Dr. Wozniack and his staff, Dr. Matt Anderson, Drs. Sint, Gilby and Cain, all of whom worked tirelessly on her care over the last year. A special thank you to the ICU unit at St. David’s Round Rock, you are the best at what you do and we will never forget your compassion as you cared for our mother. To Mom’s friends, Pat Mieske, Kay Walker, Holly Stueve and Julie and Adam Price, and Pastor Monte Marshall, many, many thank you's for your visits, Bible readings and prayers with mom. She was blessed to have you by her side in her final hours.
