Joe Henry Urrea, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Born on July 12, 1936, in Hildago, Texas, Joe lived a life defined by resilience, humility, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Maria Luisa (Bustos) Urrea — a marriage that stood as a testament to the enduring partnership they built together — as well as his children, Jose Javier Urrea, Lisa Urrea, and Daniel Urrea and his wife, Angie Haney-Urrea; and his cherished grandchildren, Ashton Taylor Urrea and Alejandro Javier Urrea.
Joe dedicated 45 years of faithful service to PYCO Industries, Inc. (formerly Plains Cooperative Oil Mill), where he rose to the position of Superintendent. His career was not without its trials — he survived four significant workplace accidents and pressed forward through racial discrimination, each time refusing to be defined by circumstance. It was this furious tenacity, as those who loved him would say, that carried him through and allowed him to provide a stable, dignified life for Maria Luisa and their family. Joe overcame every challenge not with bitterness, but with kindness.
Beyond his professional life, Joe was a man of great faith and community. An active Catholic, he was a proud Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus — a distinction that reflected his deep commitment to his beliefs and his neighbors. His greatest joys outside of faith were found on the baseball diamond and at the backyard grill. Whether watching a game or firing up the pit for family and friends, Joe had a way of making everyone feel welcome and at ease.
Those who knew Joe remember his quick humor, his easy-going spirit, and his rare ability to bring out the best in people without ever making it about himself. He held high expectations for the people around him — and then quietly helped them meet those expectations. He was a humble man who never let ego stand in the way of success. His personal motto, lived out daily, was simple: overcome every challenge with kindness.
