Joseph Scott Bennett passed away in the early morning hours on April 23, 2026, at the age of 81. Scott was born on July 11, 1944, in Austin, Texas, to Joseph “Joe” Stewart Bennett and Annie Lou Bond Bennett. He was a lifelong resident of Austin having met, married his wife of 57-years, Bertha Charlene Hausenfluke Bennett, and raising their son, Chuck.
In his younger days Scott worked a wide range of jobs which included: house moving, automotive filling station/garage, and paint store. After graduating Round Rock High School, he served our nation as a non-commissioned officer in United States Army Reserve and the Texas Army National Guard where he retired as a Command Sergeant Major. He also retired from the Vehicle, Titles, and Registration Division of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Before retiring from TxDOT, he found the love of providing emergency medical support. After retiring from TxDOT, he heard the calling to continue serving the citizens of central Texas when he went to work as an emergency room technician at Saint David’s Hospital, the same hospital he was born in. After leaving the hospital, he continued to provide medical assistance through L.E. Medics, which he founded. He provided medical assistance and support at the University of Texas home football games, Texas Special Olympics, the Austin Police Department, and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.
Scott loved looking out for his neighbors, who in turn, looked out for him especially after the passing of Charlene. He was known by all the dogs in the Dawson neighborhood as the “cookie man” because he made sure all the dog walkers stopped at this house so he could give the dog(s) their cookies. He did not restrict himself to just dogs he also fed birds and squirrels with some squirrels feeling safe enough to get bird seeds straight from his hand.
Scott was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers, Richard and James, and Bob Walden, who was like a brother. He is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Chuck and Missy, granddaughter, Caitlin, sister in-law Barbara, and his nephew and niece in-law, Rusty and Kellie.
Funeral service, with military honors, will be held on May 1, 2026, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home on 14501 North Interstate Highway 35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660. Visitation will be from Noon to two o’clock in the Longhorn chapel. The memorial and burial will follow starting at two o’clock.
Scott’s family would like to thank his neighbors, especially Josh, Kim, Ginger, and Ryan for keeping an eye on him. The family would like to thank his postal carrier, Emily, for assisting him over the years. Finally, the family would like to thank the caring staff of Hope & Grace Hospice and the Tiffin House II, in Georgetown, Texas, for the love and care they provide him in the last months of his life.
