Joseph Thomas Valcourt (JT) was born March 1, 1930 in Methuen, Massachusetts to J. Pierre and Clara (Michaud) Valcourt. He passed away on Friday, May 27 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by the love of his life, his beloved wife Anna (Mama). JT and Anna were married 68 years. The story began when he met Anna while he was in the Air Force and stationed at Bergstom in the early 1950s. He reminded us of how much Austin changed over 70 years, for better or worse, depending on how he saw the change. In recent years, JT and Anna became unable to physically care for one another and were forced to live apart. They both hated those times, and JT struggled mightily at the end due to his physical pain, but more so because of his separation from Anna.
JT had a passion for life with Anna, his family, his faith, the Knights of Columbus, among other things. Everyone who knew him knew the things he liked, because he’d tell ya. He loved the Boston Red Sox, the Celtics, Notre Dame, the Cowboys, the Astros, the Spurs, and maybe, secretly, the Horns. None of these, however, could compare to his love for PGA golf, and even stronger, how much he loved to play the game. His daddy was a greens keeper, and JT was born and grew up on a golf course in Massachusetts. He was a walking encyclopedia of golf facts, trivia, and stories. He had a great recollection of tournaments that he’d attended or seen on TV, including the date, the course name, the hole, the player, the shot, the club used, the round, and the score on that particular hole by that particular player. He’d just grin and shake his head if he was asked the color of the shirt the player was wearing that day in 1959. JT continued to play golf with his brother-in-law and best friend Jack Vaeth as often as they could until just a few years ago. Jack’s granddaughter reminded us recently that JT, Jack, and Andy (JT’s late son) are together again, golfing in heaven, with every shot a hole in one.
He usually had a lot to share about a range of subjects, because he was an avid reader of the daily newspaper, usually front to back. His friends and family also know that he did “occasionally” express his opinions with or without solicitation. This is a reminder of one of the things his friends and family may attest- JT had a slight tendency to exaggerate. This was not done to deceive, but to drive home his feelings regarding the significance of the story he was relating. Everything was made bigger and more interesting when related by JT. That is part of what made him JT Valcourt.
JT was preceded in death by his son Andrew Valcourt, his parents, and nine of his ten siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Abraham Valcourt and his brother Paul, of Germany. He also leaves his three daughters: Diana (DeeDee) Simpson (Jay), Linda Valcourt (Charley), and Denise Valcourt. He was blessed with eight grandchildren: Daniel (Dominque), Drew (Melissa), Kyle (Heather), Celeste (Jon), Kelly (Russell), Tyler, Marshall (Amy), and Becky, as well as 10 great grandchildren: Lorelei, Easton, Kaycen, Ariah, Alexandra, Daniel, Cassandra, Rowan, Athena Tilly, and MacKenzie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, several of whom he enjoyed corresponding with over the years.
