Virginia Kathryn Batey Young of Austin and in the last four years of Round Rock, Texas passed into God’s care on January 26, 2021. She was born on May 22, 1926 in Cameron, Texas the daughter of Thomas Watson Batey, a farmer, and Mother Annie Floyd Day, a teacher. She grew up on a farm outside of Cameron, Texas with a brother, Thomas Watson and sister Dorothy Marie.
Kathryn, as she was known to her friends, graduated from C. H. Yoe High School in Cameron, Texas in 1943. After graduation, she moved to Austin to find work to help the family. She worked as a postal clerk during the war; became a housewife; typed dissertations for students at the University of Texas; and worked as a legal secretary until her retirement.
On November 21, 1945, Kathryn became a wife to Charles Robert “Bob” Young. She and Bob became very involved as members of Hyde Park Christian Church. Kathryn served as an elder, chairman and member of the board, and as a member of many committees. She also participated regularly in various activities including DMA, CWF, and Sew-n-Sews. Kathryn was proud of the years she spent serving on the scholarship committee and working with youth at Christian Churches in the Bluebonnet Area. She always emphasized the importance of education for the next generation.
Family was extremely important to Kathryn. She was a wife first, but her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her universe. She attended every boy scout event, piano recital, school event, swimming meet, church activity, she could make. Holidays and vacations were always very special times.
Kathryn loved gardening, cooking and was an artist at quilting. She was appreciated for the fresh tomatoes and vegetables she grew in her garden and shared at church and in the neighborhood. Of course, there were always special dishes she took to the church socials. Kathryn’s love for quilts started at a young age when she made her first quilt with her mother at the age of 7. Family and friends will enjoy the many beautiful quilts she made and gave to them as gifts for many years to come.
Kind, caring, nurturing, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, care-taker, educator are just a few words that describe Kathryn. She will be missed by her family and friends.
