He was the grandson of Harvey and Minnie Dement and Bartholomeo and Secondina Canova. Gilbert’s loving parents were Lural and Winnie Dement. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Dement; his sister, Nancy Barr; and his sons, Douglas and Darrell Dement. He is also survived by his grandchildren Dylan and Delaney Dement.
He was born in Austin, Texas and as a young man he was a member of the Boy Scouts and loved the outdoors. His early education included attending Ridgetop Elementary School, Baker Junior High School and then graduating from McCallum High School in 1960. At McCallum High School, he earned membership into the National Honor Society and was a member of the tennis team.
After high school, he went to work with his father at Austin Brake and Clutch Service in downtown Austin. He helped grow and expand the business for many decades until he retired. Then after retiring, he stayed busy helping take care of his family, plus golfing, woodworking projects and hiking outdoors.
He always told stories about his hiking adventures with Gloria and how happy those made him.
Our loving memories of him will be cherished forever.
A memorial service celebrating Gilbert's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville.
