Larry Wayne Schlickeisen passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at the age of 77. Larry was born in Milam County on August 20, 1937, the fifth of six children of Annie and Leon Schlickeisen. Larry attended primary school in the community of Thrall before moving to Elgin and graduating in 1955 as a two-year football letterman for the Elgin Wildcats.
Larry was thirteen years old when his father passed, placing an additional workload on him and his younger brother to help earn a living on the family’s tenant farm. Through these experiences Larry developed his strong work ethic and learned the responsibilities of adulthood. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force and served his country for four years in Salina, Kansas. Near the end of his service, he married Genelle Anderson. Upon completion of his military duty, the couple moved back to Austin to begin their careers and start a family. Larry worked a short time for Hillcrest Dairies and the Texas Board of Control before beginning a career with the U.S. Postal Service that he continued until retirement in December, 1999.
Larry was a devoted husband, father and friend to many. His postal customers loved him, and he loved them. He loved his family and his home. Because of the economic circumstances of his youth, Larry was especially proud and grateful when he was able to realize the American dream of home ownership. His grandchildren were very special to him, and he loved spoiling, teasing, and having fun with them. He also loved great Tex-Mex, Sudoku, fixing things, good conversation, bad jokes, crossword puzzles, road trips through the Texas Hill Country, Blue Bell ice cream, and hi-fidelity audio equipment.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Genelle, with whom he would have celebrated 56 years of marriage on June 7. He is survived by his two sons, Wayne and David, daughter-in-law Amy, grandchildren Daniel, Ivana, Kevin, Casey, Noah and Henry Schlickeisen, and Melissa Tully. He also leaves his sisters Peggy Tyll and Dorothy McCutcheon, sister-in-law Ruth Schlickeisen, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by both parents and brothers Cleo, Edgar and Wallace.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
