

A devoted wife and mother, Lela was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry Chowning; her parents, Frank Smith and Gemima Lewis Smith; sister, Jeannie Hunnicutt; brothers, Frank C. Smith, Jr. and Ernest (Buddy) C. Smith.
Before her mother’s passing, Lela cherished their time together in Marble Falls, Texas, where they enjoyed gardening, canning and making homemade jelly—simple joys that reflected her love of nature, family and tradition.
Lela was a dedicated public servant, retiring from the Texas State Comptroller’s Office after more than 25 years of service. Her professionalism, kindness and commitment to others left a lasting impact on her colleagues and community.
She is survived by her sons, Jay Chowning and Clifton Chowning and wife, Donna Stephens; brother, Robert Smith and sister, Phyllis Elliott as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strong work ethic and unwavering love for her family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery, 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas, with the funeral service and burial immediately following at the same location.
