Lorene was born January 4, 1924 in Vernon, Texas, the 10th of 11 children born to Wesley Lee Daniels and Nancy Florence Lillian Kirchman Daniels, and was a descendant of the "Old 300" pioneer families who came to Texas with Stephen Austin. Her family moved back to Luling, TX when she was 5 with the help of her parent’s friend, Levi Toungate, who brought along with him his younger brother Lum Toungate, who was to become the love of her life. Lum and Lorene married November 5, 1938 in Luling just 2 years after Lorene's mother died, and immediately became a family by having her younger sister Ailenn and her father move in with them. They added 5 children to their family while living mostly in Luling and Round Rock, eventually building their home in the country outside of Round Rock in 1954.
Lum had a fruit and vegetable business and later opened a service station in 1964. Lorene was a homemaker and a wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved raising her children and being Maw Maw to her grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and was always ready to pull up a stool for whatever child was at her feet so they could watch her do her magic. As her granddaughter Regina said of her, "She was always full of love and compassion. You could smell it in her kitchen, and it was the aroma of her home."
Lorene's service to her family was never more important than the way she took care of her beloved Lum, who for the last 15 years of his life was afflicted with Alzheimer's. Lum died June 29, 1998 just a few months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. They were a shining example to us all of a happy and loving married couple. Family was always the most important thing in Lorene's life and she shared with them her legacy of love. She was a fine Christian lady and instilled in us to always be aware that even if she didn’t know what we were doing, God did. In her last years she became an advocate for the elderly who lived with her in her nursing home, watching out for those who could not watch out for themselves.
Lorene was the last of her siblings to die. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters; Oliver Daniels of Vernon, Nancy Daniels of Luling, Amy Daniels Magness of Farwell, George Daniels of Houston, Keaton Daniels of Caldwell, Richard Daniels of Luling, Charlie Daniels of Odessa, Luther Daniels of San Antonio, Irene Daniels Toungate of Lockhart, and Ailenn Daniels Warner of Round Rock. Lorene was also preceded in death by her granddaughter Gail Evon Walker.
Lorene is survived by all 5 of her children, Patsy Toungate Walker and husband Larry Walker of Spicewood, Jimmy Toungate of Georgetown, Larry Toungate and wife Virginia Cole Young of Rockdale, Craig Toungate and wife Susan Lincoln of Austin, and Coleen Toungate Nelson and husband Bruce Nelson of Austin. Lorene and Lum have 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren.
