Lillie was born April 14, 1918, in Monclova, Mexico to Francisco and Cecilia Hernandez. As a young girl, she moved to Austin, Texas with her mother and eight siblings after the death of her father during the Mexican Revolution. Once in America, Lillie quickly picked up English and went on to learn German and Russian. Being multilingual, she was hired by Southwestern Bell in 1941 to be an international telephone operator. She worked with the phone company until her retirement in 1981. She also served in the Navy Reserves from 1949 to 1953. After retirement, she dedicated most of her time serving in ministry at San Jose Catholic Church.
Miss Hernandez never had biological children, but with eight siblings she was a second mother to numerous nieces and nephews. She was the matriarch of the Hernandez family, constantly keeping in contact with family members in Mexico, Germany, and all over the United States.
Lillie Hernandez was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
