Maria Luisa Torres
(September 1, 1933-March 24, 2014)
Maria Luisa Torres was welcomed into the arms of our Heavenly Father, on March 24, 2014 while surrounded by her family. She was a kind-hearted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Maria was born on September 1, 1933 in Ozona, Texas and was the daughter of Samuel and Juanita Martinez.
Maria was special to so many people and all who knew her treasured her striking smile, sweet voice and compassionate heart. She loved visiting with family and friends, watching novelas, spending time with her grandchildren, cooking enchiladas and baking lemon pies. She never spoke an unkind word of anyone. Her genuine spirit was warm and uplifting to those who were blessed to be in her presence.
Her siblings remember her stunning voice as she sang while she played the piano. They also remember her playing her favorite Tchaikovsky piano pieces with great delight. She enjoyed visiting her mother’s house in Ozona and both mother and daughter would spend hours talking and watering the garden on long summer evenings, sharing their daily routines. The family liked to end the day on the front porch watching the sunset, laughing at life’s humorous moments.
She and her husband, Arturo, whom she caringly referred to as her “Honey Bunny,” shared 65 beautiful years together. They raised four sons, instilling in them the importance of family. They were owners of the 290 Café, which later became The Ranch House. They enjoyed working side by side, serving countless friends and family recipes that were handed down from Maria’s parents. Her family fondly remembers her great generosity and the many times she insisted on having all of the family and their friends eat at their restaurant.
Maria volunteered at the school teaching children how to read and was a member of the PTA. She enjoyed contributing to the community while working at the Crockett County Hospital for many years. Maria was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. She was a lector and a Eucharistic minister. She enjoyed administering the Body of Christ to the sick and home-bound. Maria’s faith was evident throughout her life and she was a loving servant to our Heavenly Father.
She was a blessing to all and will be greatly missed by her devoted husband, Arturo Torres; sons, Arturo, Jr., Saul, David, Robert and wife Darlene; grandchildren Stephanie, Anthony, Maria, Valerie, David Lee, Cristina, Kimberly and Robert; great-grandchildren; brothers, Samuel Martinez and sister-in-law Elva, Roberto Martinez and sister-in-law Alicia; sisters, Delma Sosa and brother-in-law Eddie, Sandra Martinez Cervantez and brother-in-law Sammy, Yvonne Duran and brother-in-law George, sister-in-law Anita Torres, and sister-in-law Berta Dominguez; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
During her final days she was blessed to be with two of her grandchildren, Robert and Cristina whom she adored. They brought her great joy and comfort during her last hours.
Maria was an angel here on earth and her family is consoled in knowing that she is now an angel in heaven, rejoicing with our Lord Jesus Christ and reunited with her loving parents.
