She was born in Magnolia, Arkansas, March 20, 1949, to Mary Merle and the late Albert Derton. She graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She married David F. Howard December 7, 1981, who preceded her in death in 2002.
She is survived by her son Daniel Austin Howard and mother Mary Merle of Austin, TX, two step-daughters Michelle Pak and Gabrielle Cuellar including their husbands Sang & Roland and her step-granddaughter Mia all of Rowlett, TX. Oldest brother John and his wife Sandy Derton of Austin, TX, younger brother Richard “Rick” and his wife Roseanne of Round Rock, TX, youngest brother Michael and his wife Allison of Cedar Park, TX. The Derton nephews and nieces: Dennis “Skip”, Steve, Alan, Karen, Andrew, Robin, Aaron and Isaac. Other Great nephews and nieces include: Aidan, Daxxon, Christopher and step-niece Cindy.
