Mary Jane Pohl, beloved wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025, in her hometown of Austin, Texas, at the age of 75.
Born on June 21, 1949, in Austin, Mary Jane lived a life rooted in compassion, devotion, and a deep love for family. She was married to her husband, Richard Pohl, Jr., for 54 years — a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Mary Jane dedicated 38 years of her life to teaching, shaping the minds and hearts of countless students with her warmth and wisdom. Her classroom was more than just a place of learning; it was a sanctuary of encouragement and inspiration.
Mary Jane found her greatest joy in her family. She was an adoring and loving mother to her son Brent Pohl and his wife Erin of Austin, TX, and a very proud “Nana” to Ethan, Kaylee, and Grayson Pohl. Her face would light up when she spoke of her grandchildren, and her love for them knew no bounds. She is also survived by her brother, Calvin Riggs, Jr. and wife Franka of The Woodlands, TX, her brother-in-law, David Jeffus of Lovelady, TX, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mary Jane was known not only for her kind heart and deep compassion, but also for her remarkable strength in the face of life’s challenges. No matter what hardships came her way, she met them with grace, quiet determination, and an unwavering belief in the good. Even in difficult times, she found joy in the little things and made others feel seen, heard, and loved.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents Calvin Riggs, Sr. and Jo Ann Riggs, her sister Barbara Jeffus, and nieces Kimberly Jeffus and Angela Treadwell.
A visitation will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM and burial at 2:00 PM, all at Cook-Walden Capital Parks, 14501 N Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, Texas. A reception will follow, where family and friends are invited to share memories and celebrate Mary Jane’s life.
