

Mary Elizabeth Fewell Welge of Austin, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, at the age of 86. She was born on January 27, 1938, in Lampasas, Texas to James Melton and Aleece Fewell. She spent her early years in Briggs, Texas and moved to Austin with her family during World War II. She attended Pease Elementary School, Fulmore Junior High School and was on the Rebelette drill team at Travis High School. Mary attended the University of Texas and was a proud lifetime member of the Texas Exes. She also attended Hyde Park Baptist Church, where she met her future husband, Carl Eddie Welge, Jr.
Mary and Carl were married June 7, 1958. They welcomed a boy, Bert, into the family in 1964, followed by a daughter, Beth, in 1967. Mary and Carl lived in Austin all their lives, where Mary was a stay-at-home mom who volunteered with her children’s endeavors and ran her own business from home. She turned her creativity into jewelry and home décor which she sold all over Texas. Later in her life, she found a passion for quilting that she pursued through the end of her life. Mary entered quilted wall hangings in various competitions, winning ribbons in the State Fair several times.
Mary is preceded in death by Carl, as well as her parents, Aleece and Melton Fewell. She is survived by her son, Bert Welge and his wife, Lisa, and their children and their spouses, Emily and Zach Pomfret, and Libby and Joshua Hinds. She is also survived by her daughter Beth and husband Jeff Questad, as well as Mary’s sister-in-law, Shirley Hester Davenport and her husband Skip Davenport.
Mary’s family would like to thank the nurses, management, and especially the staff of Brookdale Round Rock for the care and compassion they showed our mother in the years she lived there. Your love and care made her last years happier and richer. She loved you all very much.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home on Saturday, June 8, at 10:00 a.m. The family would like to invite Mary’s friends to visit with them in the hour before the service begins. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
