On April 30, 1939, in Hutto, Texas, Retired Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Melvin Dixon Sr. was born the youngest of six children to Morise Dixon Sr. and Arichard Green-Dixon. Raised in a loving, God-fearing home, Melvin accepted Christ at an early age while attending St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1961, Melvin began his distinguished military career by joining the United States Army, where his integrity, leadership, and commitment to excellence earned him the prestigious rank of Command Sergeant Major—the highest enlisted rank attainable. During his 30 years of honorable service, he received numerous medals and commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars, and many other awards recognizing his valor, dedication, and exceptional service.
After retiring from the military, he continued serving the nation through the Department of the Army and later became a successful businessman with real-estate and financial ventures.
Melvin was a fierce advocate for equality and justice, believing deeply that progress began at the ballot box. He never missed an election and encouraged everyone around him to vote early and use their voice for change.
On April 18, 1976, Melvin was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Dorothy Lillian Dixon. Their bond was so profound they married twice—once in love and again in renewed devotion. When Dorothy became ill, Melvin lovingly and faithfully cared for her until her passing on July 29, 2013.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents; twin granddaughters; his son, Timothy Lamone Dixon; his sister, Clara Wright; and his brothers, Horace Dixon and Morise Dixon Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory: sons Melvin Dixon Jr. and Alonzo Dixon (Sherlyn); daughter Dr. Bonita Owens (Atrell); brother Earlie Dixon, and sister Dorthy Wilson, sister-in-law Rebecca Dixon; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him deeply.
His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure. He is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
