Deacon Morris Thompson was born to the late Reverend Sylvester Thompson, Sr. and the late Frances Martha Ann Louis Thompson on July 13, 1955, in Austin, Texas. He transitioned to his heavenly home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2026 at the age of 70. As a child his parents instilled in him a strong sense of compassion and kindness. During his life span, he exemplified these virtues in his daily interactions with others and his walk with Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ at the early age of 15 years old and remained a dedicated, member of Open Door Church of God in Christ serving as a Deacon.
Deacon Thompson grew up in Austin and went to Sims Elementary School, where his class liked reading a book called “I Can Read! Morris the Moose”, well the rest is history. He graduated from Reagan High School in 1974, where he was an avid athlete who played football and loved sports. He was unable to follow his dream of playing football at Baylor University in Waco, Texas because of a knee injury, so he found another loved which was tinkering with cars, motors, and transmissions. Deacon built his first car by himself at a young age.
Deacon Thompson was gifted as a child along with his other sibling to be able to sing, and play musical instruments without reading sheet music. As children, they liked to sit around the house listening to their dad and his brother sing and play music all night long. On one evening when Elder Thompson came home and heard singing in the background, he asked his wife whose radio was playing so loudly. She stated that was not a radio, it was the kids in their backroom singing. Elder Thompson walked to the back with amazement and from that date on the siblings started singing and playing in the Church for their dad.
Deacon Thompson, as a member of the renowned Thompson Singers, alongside his family, developed a deep, lifelong passion for music. He beautifully displayed this love by singing and playing the bass guitar, proving himself to be a phenomenal bass player. He was a humble musician and had a spirit of gratitude when he played and would sing God’s praises. He has song with many professional groups like the Might Clouds of Joy, The Blind Boys of Alabama, etc. He was also a member of the Austin Quartet Association and generously used his musical talents to assist many other musical groups. Beyond his music, Morris was a dedicated member of the Most Worshipful St Joseph Grand Lodge of Texas/Mount Olive Grand Chapter of Texas Order of Eastern Star, (Capital City Lodge #0512) & (Lily of the Valley Chapter #47 OES); East Austin Garden Club and Austin Area Garden Council/Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy.
Deacon Thompson was a dedicated employee for 23 years with the City of Austin, Water & Wastewater Department as a Pipeline Maintenance Supervisor, where he spread joy, affection, and love to everyone he encountered until his well-earned retirement. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys!!!
Deacon Thompson’s spirit was larger than life itself and a true kid at heart, because he never met a stranger. His warm personality allowed him to share his love of music with anyone wanting to learn, leaving beautiful memories for his loved ones remaining behind to cherish and share with others, keeping his legacy of music alive. He loved spending precious time with his family, sharing his extensive knowledge across his favorite hobbies: hunting, fishing, construction, video games, cooking, and singing and watching cable television.
