Nellie graduated from Kyle High School and then attended Southwest Texas Teacher’s College in San Marcos. After college, she taught at a country school near East Barnard. This is where she met her future husband, Herman A. Spoede. They fell in love and married on July 21, 1946 at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Wallis, Texas. Two years later, they moved to Austin, where they had 65 years of a fulfilling life together. For many of these years, Nellie worked for the Internal Revenue Service, and it is during these years that she volunteered at Saint Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving in a myriad of programs.
Nellie was the oldest of Harvey Lee and Eula Mae (Davidson) Hogan’s six children. She learned her helpful, nurturing ways by caring for her younger siblings. She was a shining example of living to serve and please others.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, her son-in-law, David W. Henke, sisters Wilma Reid, Jean Schaller, and brother, Preston Hogan.
Nellie’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cook Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2019 followed by burial in Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
