Norma, also known as Baby (derived from her late grandfather who first called her, "La Pretty Baby"), Grandma and Tia Norma was a beloved wife to her late husband, Lupe, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Norma's gift of caring for and doting on others was her joy in life. She not only passed these traits on to her children, but to others in and outside the family.
Norma married the love of her life, Guadalupe Jose Hernandez in 1963. She followed him to Mercedes, Texas, where she graduated from Mercedes High School, and then moved with him to Pontiac, Michigan, where he worked in the automotive industry. After having their first child, Orlando, they moved back to Austin, Texas to be closer to family. Norma was a stay at home mom before beginning her distinguished career at Motorola, where she worked for over 30 years and earned a reputation as a respected leader and mentor. She left in 1998 then went on to work for the State Securities Board of Texas for a few years with her side-kick Lupe, whom she carpooled with everyday. Norma finally retired from work in 2008 after Lupe's passing.
Norma enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, crochet, traveling, dancing, participating on the Johnston High School Reunion Committee and celebrating her long time friend's birthday lunches, many of whom she had known since grade school. She especially enjoyed spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. We always enjoyed watching her face light up with joy when she'd see them.
A Long time resident of the Austin Metro area, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Guadalupe Jose Hernandez, her parents Pedro Garcia Salinas and Olivia Gonzalez Salinas, her daughter Vanessa Loreina Sawyer (Daniel), and grandson Nikolaz Sosa. She is survived by her son Orlando Roel Hernandez(Brenda), daughter Melissa Zavala(James), two brothers, four sisters, six grand children and six great grandchildren.
Our mother Norma was so very loved and will be missed by many of her family and friends.
