Olin Clyde Dearing, Jr., age 84, passed into the arms of Jesus on October 21, 2012 at St. David’s – Round Rock Medical Center from a lung ailment. He was born September 11, 1928 to Olin Clyde Dearing, Sr. and Nova Lee Harvey Dearing in Waxahachie. He was a 5th generation Texan.
He played the saxophone in his high school Maroon Band as well as the Swing Kings band, which entertained at dances. He graduated from Austin High School in 1946 and served in the Texas Army National Guard from 1946 to 1949. He also attended the University of Texas from 1946 to 1952 and played saxophone in the Longhorn Band.
He married the former Jo Anne Holtzclaw on June 27, 1949 in Austin. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary with a vow renewal ceremony at Heatherwilde Park Retirement Apartments in Pflugerville where they lived.
Mr. Dearing had a long career with corporations such as Superior Dairies, Foremost Dairies, Dairy Distributers Inc., UniRoyal Tires, and Financial Industries Corporation in such positions as dairy truck driver, bookkeeper, traveling auditor, and vice president. It was with Financial Industries Corporation that lifelong Texans Mr. and Mrs. Dearing moved to New Jersey and Mississippi during the late 1980s before returning to their hometown of Austin. After retiring from FIC, Mr. Dearing began a second career with the State of Texas at the Texas Workforce Commission where he worked for ten years as a Systems Analyst.
Mr. and Mrs. Dearing were avid Square and Round Dancers and participated in many local clubs from the 1970s to the 1990s when the couple was elected Presidents of the Austin Square and Round Dance Association. (Round Dancing is like ballroom dancing done in a large circle.) They taught many others how to enjoy dancing and traveled far and wide to participate. Mr. Dearing used the square dance term “Yellow Rock” as his email name because it means “hug”. This is an example of his always cheerful disposition. Another example is his favorite Bible verse: “A cheerful heart is good medicine” from Proverbs 17:22, with which he closed each email.
In addition to his beloved wife Jo Anne, Mr. Dearing is survived by his three daughters: Mrs. Ron D. Beard (Jo Lynn) of Austin; Mrs. Louis Johnson (Nancy Lee) of Liberty Hill; and Mrs. A.B. Walters (Elizabeth Anne) of Georgetown; and his son: Mr. Olin Clyde Dearing III and wife Tamra of Conroe. Mr. Dearing has one granddaughter and five grandsons, as well as two great-granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Catherine Dearing Day.
On Saturday, October 27, 2012, the family invites you to join them at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North IH-35 in Pflugerville for visitation at 2:30pm and Mr. Dearing’s memorial service at 3:30pm.
