Raymond Patrick Canion was born to Annabelle and Patrick Canion on November 10, 1938 and passed over on July 23, 2016 at his home. He graduated from Travis High School and then the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1961. After working as an Estimator/Cost Engineer for Brown and Root on projects such as Guri Dam in Venezuela and the Astrodome, he returned to Austin in 1964 to work for the family business.
His great-grandfather and sons, Dick and W. Raymond, originated the business in 1890 operating in the Spindle Top oilfield constructing fire walls and slush pits, employing mule teams in lieu of modern day heavy equipment. The company moved to Austin in 1900 with Dick operating a Livery business in downtown Austin and W. Raymond continuing the contracting operations. W. Raymond’s son, Pat R., worked in the business all his life, inheriting it in 1950 when it became Pat Canion Excavating Co. Raymond P. took over operations serving as President and CEO in 1967 until retirement in 2004. Principally operating in central Texas in the capacity of a general contractor, the operations included excavating, site preparation, paving, earthen dams, concrete work, streets, water, wastewater, storm sewer, drainage improvements and highway construction. There are sidewalks all over Austin in older neighborhoods imprinted with the company’s stamp. Projects included site work for Twin Oaks Shopping Center, Highland Mall, Southwood Mall, numerous schools in the AISD & subdivisions and utility contracts including 300 miles of water line construction. Additionally, he built houses and condos in Austin and Beeville under the name of R. C. Builders in the 1980’s.
Raymond was an avid fan of all sports, especially University of Texas sports. He also enjoyed cars, motorhomes, boats and motorcycles. He dearly loved and was loved by his family and friends.
In his last days, he shared with us proof of the afterlife and this message “you were individually created by Yahweh (God) for a purpose that will all work out and happen. All you have to do is have faith.”
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Judy Canion, and his children (Steve & Merry Canion, Shelby Walden & husband Bruce, Ross Canion & wife Christy, and his sister Mary Boyd & husband Andy, grandchildren (Brent, Chase, Ashley, Harrison, Ariel and Jasmine), brother and sister-in-law Jim and Susan Helgren, and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, July 30, 2016 from noon to 2:00 pm at the Onion Creek Senior Center in Buda.
