Richard Arlen Cawthon was called home by our Heavenly Father on July 16, 2013, following several months of declining health. Richard was born June 14, 1930 in Waco, Texas to Dorothy Lois (Pringle) and James Fulton Cawthon, Sr. He lived in the Waco area until he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge as a Corporal, he returned to Waco and attended Baylor University majoring in physical education. He had a fulfilling career with the Texas Department of Transportation for more than 35 years in Wichita Falls, Bellville and Austin.

On January 30, 1960 he married Dorothy Lee Dobesh and on September 14, 1967, they had a lovely daughter and named her D’Arlen Lorena to honor both parents and her maternal grandmother. Richard and D’Arlen enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys together. In 1977 the family moved to Elgin, Texas and built a home doing most of the construction themselves. He was blessed with two grandchildren Hunter Arlen and Ciara Blynn Tumey. They were the joy of his life and they spend many vacations together.

Richard loved the Lord and was a devoted Christian. He believed his greatest accomplishment was serving as a deacon at the University Hills Church of Christ and later at the Elgin Church of Christ.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law Lorena and Adolph Dobesh, sister-in-law Paula Cawthon, and sister-in-law Alma Kucera and husband Robert.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Dorothy, daughter D’Arlen, grandchildren Hunter, Ciara and fiancé D.J. Vybiral, brother James Fulton Cawthon, Jr. and wife Carrie Mae, brother Ronald Clark Cawthon, Sr., brother-in-law Charles Adolph Dobesh, Sr. and wife Nelda, five nieces, seven nephews, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Dear Dorothy, D'Arlen, Hunter and Ciara, Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. We are so sorry to hear of Richard's passing and we mourn with you. May God bless each of you with good memories of times you spent with Richard. Hunter I was with your grandparents when you were playing football and weight lifting. My son, Jacob was playing football against your team and weight lifting against your team. But we had such a good time visiting while we watched you play. Your granddad was very proud of you. I know you will miss him. Remember whom he served and lived his life for. You can't go wrong following his footsteps. May God bless all of you.

My name is Daniel wayne Cawthon and I never remember met your family. My family originated from Tennessee going way back but in modern times established a family graveyard in Crandall, Texas. With this little bit of background I might be kin to Richard. Don't know and the only reason I bring it up is that through my life the Cawthon name has been rare. I'll be 75 in September. In recent times I've been half heartedly trying to do genealogy and this is the first time I saw a Cawthon in the Austin newspaper. I hope I did not ramble too much and wish your family my deepest condolences.

I just heard and my prayers are with you all. You can be comforted to know that he is in the arms of The Lord now and that he suffers no more. You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. He was a wonderful man and I have many memories of him from high school days with D'Arlen. I wish God's peace on you all.
