Richard Herbert Wingert, son of Alfred “Fritz” and Antilia (Blum) Wingert, was born December 21, 1947. As the fourth of six children, he grew up working the farm with his family. He graduated St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, Iowa, and went on to receive his Associate Degree in Computer Programming.
He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Stein on April 20, 1968. They raised two sons, Steven and Scott, and their favorite daughter, Jennifer.
Rich and Barb were active in their faith community at St. John Vianney. They were Saturday night ushers and Rich was very active in the Knights of Columbus. Everyone will miss his fantastic fish and crispy French Fries.
Sports were very important to Rich. Not only did he grow up playing baseball and basketball, he went on to support community youth by both coaching and refereeing baseball, basketball, and ultimately, soccer. He also supported youth by volunteering as a Cub Scout Den Leader. His favorite sports team was the Chicago Cubs and no matter how badly they played, he always rooted for them. He was so happy when they won the world series! Go Cubbies!!
In the last few years, Rich tried his hand at painting and not only found that he enjoyed it, but that he was pretty good at it! His new found hobby has allowed him to leave behind a treasured piece of his heart for his large - and still growing - family.
Rich is survived by his wife, three children, 10 grandchildren: Bethany, Hannah, Rebekah, Gareth, Jacob, Taryn, Joshua (Jen/John Trimarco), Theresa (Scott/Leah Strawn), Matthew and Olivia (Steve/Amanda Williams), and 2.5 great-grandchildren: Ares, Leonidas, and - soon to debut - Freyja (Bethany/Ricky Guerra Jr.). He is also survived by his brothers Alf, Ken, and Mark, his sister, Joan, and their families.
On August 6, 2020, Rich went to meet his parents and brother, Don, in the Southwest corner of Heaven.
The Holy Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., Friday, August 28, 2020 with a Memorial Mass following the Rosary at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 3201 Sunrise Road, Round Rock, Texas.
