Robert Fleming was born January 12, 1926 in McDade, Texas, the youngest child of six of Estella and H.C, Fleming, five boys and a girl. He was preceded in death by his parents, elder brothers and sister.
Robert grew up in Rockdale, Texas where he graduated from Rockdale High School. Upon his graduation in 1944, Robert joined the Marine Corp. prior to turning eighteen, with the permission of his parents. Robert served in WWII, and when he returned from the war, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for one semester while working for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) before he was called back by the Marine Reserve to serve in Korea.
After returning home from Korea, Robert returned to work for Southwestern Bell. Robert began his career with the telephone company as a lineman and advanced through the ranks until his retirement in 1987.
Robert married his true love and devoted wife, Nell Wier, on April 9, 1954 and they settled in the Crestview neighborhood in Austin. Their son, Michael Fleming, arrived in 1956 and the family moved to the Travis Heights neighborhood where daughter Laura was welcomed in 1965. After residing in Travis Heights for thirty-nine years, the family moved to north of the river in Austin where Robert lived with Nell for the remainder of his life.
Robert and Nell were steadfastly by one another’s side throughout their sixty-eight years of marriage. In addition to his loving wife, Robert is survived by son, Michael Fleming, his wife, Kathy Fleming, and their two children, Matthew Fleming & his wife, Jackie Fleming, and Jessica Fleming & her husband, Kartik Malhotra; daughter, Laura Fleming; and multiple nieces and nephews. Robert leaves behind many close friends in their small North Austin community where he, Nell and their little dog, Emma Lou, were frequently spotted while walking and visiting with neighbors.
The family would like to thank Texas Home Health for their support, dedication and compassionate care during Robert’s final transition.
