Mrs. Santos Garza De La Rosa died peacefully in Bee Cave, TX on March 1, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 5, 1922 in Brownsville, TX and raised in Raymondville, TX where she enjoyed close relationships with her parents, eight brothers and sisters, family, and friends.
Santos married Juan De La Rosa on July 23, 1943. They lived briefly in Memphis, TN before he deployed for World War II. Eventually, she moved with her husband and their five children to San Antonio, TX in the mid-1960s and to Austin, TX in 1985. She lived a full life as a wonderful mother, cherished grandmother, and dedicated homemaker. She was a hardworking sales associate, worked at election polls, and volunteered at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in San Antonio. In her free time, she liked to bake, garden, sew, and she continued to do all these activities well into her 90s. She had an amazing green thumb, and was so proud of her treasured garden, gladly taking us on tours to see her beautiful plants. Her favorite rose was the “Peace” rose.
Santos thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and often entertained them with drawing, juggling, card games, cicada yoyos, tongue twisters and stories from her childhood. She lived independently for almost 30 years after her beloved husband Juan passed away in 1988. Her family is so very thankful for her many friends and neighbors who loved and looked out for her, including Martha Mohr, Ella Garza, and especially Margaret Lockwood. We would also like to thank the staff of Park Manor Bee Cave Nursing home including Taime, Juana, Kelly and many more.
Santos was known as “Della” to some and as “Nana” to the Art Gonzalez family. She will be remembered for her strong and unwavering love and devotion to her family and her faith. We are blessed that she was with us for so many years and we will carry her memory in our hearts. She will be dearly missed by all.
Santos is survived by her brother Paul Garza and his wife Eva; her children and their spouses, Mary and Roman Palomares, John and Angelica De La Rosa, Joe and Jeanette De La Rosa, Robert and Iris De La Rosa, and Lewis and Maru De La Rosa; along with her 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
A time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2020 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas, with a Reflection Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. immediately followed by a rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m. in The Memorial Chapel.
