Sidney Walter McQuarry

Sidney lived a long and fruitful life. He was born in Moberly, Missouri to Hazel Cason and Herman McQuarry. The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa when he was just three years old. He graduated from high school in January 1952 and entered the United States Air Force in May where he became a navigator and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in September 1955 and worked for a year at Solars Aircraft.

He met his future wife, Joan Edwards, during his high school days while travelling back and forth to Marshalltown, Iowa for dances. He rekindled his relationship with her after he left military service. They were married on September 2, 1956 by Joan’s uncle, the Reverend Gladstone E. Wells. Shortly after, Sidney and Joan moved to Denver, Colorado to start their new lives together. They were married for sixty years.

Sidney worked in a hospital for three months before accepting a position at the post office in January 1957. He started as a letter sorter, and through trainings and advancements, worked his way to station manager. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in May 1988. In 2014, he and his wife relocated to Austin.

Sidney is survived by his son, Stephen McQuarry (Sherre’) of Oakland, California; daughter, Sandra Merriweather (Eugene) of Austin, Texas; grandson, Mark Felton, granddaughter, Veronica Felton, both of Austin, Texas; step granddaughters, Brittany Reed of Louisville, Kentucky; Tarayla Merriweather of Austin, Texas; step grandsons, Dylan Merriweather of Decatur, Illinois; Geno Merriweather of Panama City, Florida; and five great-grandchildren, Joy and Jacorian Merriweather of Peoria, Illinois; Ri’mee and Isis Felton of Atlanta, Georgia; Zaiden Edwards of Austin, Texas; and other significant family members.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Friday, April 21, 2017 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 22, 2017 in the Memorial Chapel of the funeral home.
