Stephen O’Neil Gumbs, 44, of Round Rock, passed away on October 21, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Stephen, often known as Gummy Bear, was born on September 14, 1966 to Washington Gumbs and Bernadine Williams in St. Kitts, West Indies. He was the second of four children. Stephen earned a BS in Information Technology from American InterContinental University. Stephen enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for 8 years as an Automated Logistics Specialist. He was a self proclaimed “Super Soldier”, earning his rank of Sergeant during his first three years of service. Stephen fought in Desert Storm and was later deployed 3 times during the 90’s. His diverse career in Management in Austin, led him to the University of Texas at Austin as a Buyer and Desktop Support Specialist.
Stephen accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. His faith and perseverance made him an example. He was well respected among his peers. His strength and optimism brought happiness and laughter to all who were blessed to have known him. Stephen was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme grade IV in April 2008. He underwent extensive therapies, always strong and positive until the end. Stephen’s accomplishments were many, but the most important was his family. He was a proud and loving son, husband and father. He was deeply devoted to his “little angels”. His happiness, assurance and adoration filled his home and family with love. Stephen’s example will continue to provide courage for the family to stand together. He will forever remain our Super Hero.
Stephen leaves to cherish him memory: his beloved wife, Dione; two beautiful daughters, Jordan and Sierra; mother, Bernadine Williams and step-father, Allenton; father, Washington Gumbs; siblings: Theodore Joseph and wife, Yvonne, Allan Williams, Aimee Williams and Camilla Ford and husband, Keith; brother-in-law, Ed Rollet; sister-in-law, Ruthie Rollet; four nieces and two nephews; God sons: Anthony Rivers Jr., Rashad Rivers and a host of special family members and friends.
The family will receive guests at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted in the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks, at 9:00 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2010. Interment will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
