Verne Welch Ferguson passed away peacefully on June 4, 2013, one week after her 91st birthday. She was born to the late Georgia Nichols Welch and Matthew Scott Welch on May 28, 1922 in Crockett, Texas. Verne married Paul E. Ferguson in 1945 following his return from Army service. In 1949 they established a home in Austin, where they lived and raised their family for over 50 years. They also built a “camp house” on Ferguson family property in Madisonville, Texas, where they spent many happy and memorable weekends with their children and grandchildren. Verne retired from the Internal Revenue Service after working there for many years. She was much loved by her family, friends, coworkers, and eventually caregivers for her joyfulness and sensibility. She loved reading, music, flowers, holidays, family gatherings, and desserts, especially ice cream.
She is survived by her son, Paul E. Ferguson, Jr. and wife Carolyn; grandchildren Trey Ferguson, Mendy Sharpe and husband David, Rex Ferguson, D’Ann Gerbine and husband Peter, Kelly Gamble and husband David, Jeremy Ferguson and wife Julie, Crystal Ferguson, Nicole Ferguson; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Verne was preceded in death by her husband Paul; sons Mark, Keith and Jack; parents Matthew and Georgia Welch; and her brothers Glenn and Matthew.
