He graduated from Old L.C. Anderson High School in the class of 1959 before he continued his education by attending Austin Community College and Texas A&M University. Vernon served in The United States Air Force for four years before working for the City of Austin for 28 and a half years.
Vernon was a devout Christian and a dedicated member of Freedom Home Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a Deacon (“Heavy on the D”). He was a member and past President of the Elmo Carathers Male Chorus as well as a member and past Treasurer of The Brotherhood among other Freedom Home ministries. He was also awarded as a Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Lifetime Member in 2013.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Shirley, his son Kevin, ten brothers, and two sisters.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Marion Carathers, brother David Carothers, daughters: Vernita Hargrove, Erin Santiesteban (Jose), Ebony Carathers, Chemeika Washington, Jocelyn Johnson, and Jennifer Johnson, sons: Vernon Clay Carathers and Michael James as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2019 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Freedom Home Baptist Church in Austin, Texas followed by an interment in Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
