In his youth, Walter worked as a ranch hand and then later as a farmer. At a dance, he fell in love and later married the girl of his dreams, Irene Mager, in 1948. When their family started to grow, he took a second job as a shift supervisor at Travis State School. In the 1970’s, he became an entrepreneur and started a cultured marble business with his sons. The family business supported multiple members of the family until it was sold in the 1990’s. After retiring, Walter and Irene enjoyed many fun times with their friends at the Herman Son’s Lodge, VFW and SPJST Hall. Their love for country western dancing from their youth became their passion in retirement. They enjoyed working in their vegetable garden and would share the fruits of their labor with family and friends. Walter continued to till and care for the garden into his 90’s.
Walter instilled in his children an appreciation for wildlife and enjoyment of outdoors, hunting and fishing. Many family trips were centered around camping at deer leases. He taught his children by example and his determination and ingenuity showed us how we can do anything we focus on.
Walter is predeceased by his parents, Fritz and Emma Nehring; his wife of 71 years, Irene; and his sisters, Olga (Woodrow Lee), Gertrude (Grady Sanders), and Edna Chamberlain. Walter is survived by his children: Wayne (wife Nancy, children Paul, August and Michael), Alan (friend Faye, children Cheryl and Ryan), Linda (step-daughter Shelli Smithey), Elaine (husband Grady Chandler, children Julianna, Michelle and Kristin), Carolyn (husband Robert York, children Chris, Coleman, and Emma) and great grandchildren Natalie, Nathan, Edward, Kaitlyn, Lucas, Hunter, Madison, Sean, Landon, Levi, Alexis, Fox, Taralynn and Jenna.
Walter and Irene had strong faith and enjoyed many years of worship at church, most recently as members of Redeeming Grace Lutheran Church.
A special thank you to Jose Agustin Martinez MD, Manuel Martin MD, and Norman Risinger MD for their many years of medical care of Walter.
