Walter Shaw, Jr. of Austin, Texas passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on January 10, 1936, in Austin, Texas, where he grew up surrounded by family and developed a lifelong love for music, education, faith, and serving others.
Walter was baptized into Christ at an early age and remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ at Eastside in Austin, Texas for many years. His faith guided every aspect of his life and was evident through his service, leadership, generosity, and devotion to his family and church family. He was a steadfast example of Christian living and remained committed to worship, fellowship, and service throughout his life.
Walter graduated from Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, in 1962 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. He later earned a Master’s degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1979 and a Doctoral Degree in Spiritual Philosophy from the University of Texas in 2012.
Walter proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. During his military service, he was a member of the United States Air Force Band and often performed for service members stationed overseas. He received an honorable discharge upon completion of his service and carried his love for music and service throughout the remainder of his life.
While attending Huston-Tillotson College, Walter met Barbara Jo Hall of Fort Worth, Texas. The two were united in marriage in 1962 and faithfully shared 64 years of love, devotion, and partnership. Together they raised three children from their union: Karen Michelle Sheppard of Houston, Texas; Eric Michael Shaw of Frisco, Texas; and John Elvin Shaw of Houston, Texas. Walter was also the proud father of Henrietta Dora Shaw-Johnson, of Thibodaux, Louisiana and Kevin Anthony Shaw of Newport News, Virginia.
Walter dedicated his professional life to music education and the development of young people. He began his teaching career in 1963 at Terrell High School in Denison, Texas, where he shared his passion for music with students and laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to education. He later taught music at the Texas State School for the Blind beginning in 1969 for 11 years before continuing his career in the Austin Independent School District, where he taught music at several schools, including Kealing Junior High School until he retired in 1992. A gifted teacher, mentor, and musician, Walter inspired countless students to appreciate music, develop their talents, and pursue excellence in all areas of life. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to education, he was named Austin Independent School District Teacher of the Year in 1982, 1983, and 1984.
Beyond the classroom, Walter was an accomplished performer who played with several jazz bands throughout the 1960s and through the early ‘80s. Under his leadership and participation, his bands earned numerous local, regional, and national honors and awards. His lifelong commitment to music, education, and artistic excellence culminated in his induction into the Texas Music Museum, honoring his lasting contributions to music and the cultural heritage of Texas.
Walter was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., having joined in 1962. Throughout his life, he exemplified the fraternity’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and service to mankind. Those principles were not merely ideals to Walter—they were reflected daily in the way he treated others, led his family, and served his community.
~ If there is one thing those who knew Walter will always remember, it is that he genuinely loved people. His greatest delight was making someone smile. He had an extraordinary gift for making others feel welcomed, important, and cared for. If you needed help, Walter was the kind of man who would not rest until he found a way to provide it. It didn’t matter whether you were family, a friend, a student, or someone he had just met—he believed that serving others was one of life’s highest callings. His generosity, humility, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith became the hallmark of a life well lived.
