Will grew up with an older brother Phillip, two younger half-brothers, Joey and Michael, and a step sister Stephanie. As a kid he loved to be adventurous and daring but he always got caught having too much fun. Which meant he always had the best stories to tell.
Will and his family moved to San Antonio where they started school and made many lifelong friends.
Shortly after High school he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Will enjoyed four years in the service striking Boatswain's Mate Third Class and earning his coxswain qualification. During this time, he sailed on the USCGC WESTWIND and USCGC NORTHWIND, serving from the Arctic Circle, Icelandic Domain, Greenland, New York, and finally down to Small Boat Station Port Aransas Texas.
Will had a distinguished career with the Austin Police Department for the past 22 ½ years. He was commissioned on Oct. 23, 1998 and began his career on patrol in North Austin, Adam sector. He soon transferred to two different Specialized Street Response Units before promoting to Corporal in June 2009 and transferred to South Central Austin, Henry Sector. Less than a year later, he transferred to the Property Interdiction Team as a detective. In Feb, 2013, Will transferred to the Robbery Unit for about 2 years and then transferred to the Narcotic Conspiracy Unit in Feb. 2015, where he was assigned until the time of his death. During his decorated career at APD, Will received several awards to include, a Life Saving Award, a Meritorious Conduct award, a Superior Service Award, an Honorable Conduct Award, a Military Service Award and a Safe Driving Award.
Will and his first wife, Maureen, met young and had two children, Alexander and Alyssa Monte. His children mirrored his love of life and energetic soul.
Later in life, Will fell in love with Julie, a kindred spirit who made him smile as much as he made others laugh. For the next five years, they spent every waking moment experiencing new adventures in life and planning their future together. Last year, he whole heartedly took on the role of a father figure to Julie’s young son, Isaac, whose father had passed away. On June 12, 2020, Julie and Will married, expressing their eternal love for each other through the eyes of God. Julie Monte was in all sense an angel, who cared for Will before and during his hard-fought fight against cancer.
Will’s LIKES were: BBQing, Baseball/Coaching, Fishing, Hunting, everything to do with being out on the water and spending that time with family and friends.
BBQing: Almost every weekend Will grilled, making his loved one’s tons of good food with the best sides; Laughter, Washers, and Beer were always included.
Coaching: Will played, coached, and had a profound love for baseball and volleyball. He coached his Son (Alexander), his daughter (Alyssa), and many others throughout the years. He took pride in coaching and instilled many life lessons such as work ethic, teamwork, and camaraderie. Many of the relationships made on the field carried over into lifelong family friendships with many wonderful families.
Supportive Father: Will made it a point to always support and encourage his children in all their interests and activities. He dedicated his time to make sure they were and will continue to proceed on the right path.
Fishing: If you ever heard Will tell stories you were bound to hear about his kayaking or deep-sea fishing adventures. Even though he went often, it was never about catching fish but the time spent with the ones he loved. The ones who fished with him could probably tell you a ridiculously funny story about their time out but couldn’t tell you how many or what fish they ended the day with.
Hunting: Will was truly in Utopia when he was in the country away from the commotion of the city. He had a deep respect for wildlife never taking what he wasn’t going to use nor killing just to kill. Will appreciated the land, enjoying its beauty as the sun rose and set on the hill country.
It seemed that Will always knew what he was doing and had all the answers, his confidence was all encompassing and empowered others to be confident in themselves. He was a natural leader who filled the room with his stern but carrying presents, empowering the strong to protect the weak. He dedicated his life to service, protecting his family, city, state, and country.
Will had a special resolve to see the best in not only his friends but those who might have wronged him. He forgave and proceeded down a righteous path, teaching others to learn from his mistakes.
Will deeply valued relationships, always willing to help a friend in need no matter what it was. Many a time he was the first one to offer his help and expertise whether that be to fix a water heater or lead a raid team. He always seemed to surround himself with goodhearted people playing practical jokes and sharing a beer with. His sense of humor and laugh were infectious. No matter where he was, he was the life of the party as he made sure to include everyone in the fun.
