

Bill was born in Kingsport, Tennessee, to the late Georgia and William Bowles, Jr. Bill spent his childhood in Kingsport, graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School. He attended East Tennessee State University and was graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1957, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He later received board certification in both Oral Surgery and Prosthodontics.
Upon graduation he married Nancy R. McGovern. They were married for 45 years and had two daughters, Frances and Amy.
Dr. Bowles served for 25 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corp with two overseas tours. He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit Award, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal, as well as numerous other awards. Dr. Bowles retired as Colonel in 1985.
Dr. Bowles then served as Chairman of the Prosthodontics Department at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry for 18 years.
After losing his first wife to cancer, he found the second love of his life and was married to Nancy B. Holdeman in 2003. Bill thoroughly enjoyed retirement, making lasting friends through Sun City activities and clubs. His passions were golf, fishing, travel, good food and wine. He loved to laugh, tell tall tales and stories, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy each day to its fullest.
Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy Banister Bowles; sister Julie B. McCary (Michael) of Lafayette, GA; daughters, Frances B. Parker (Richard) of Madison, WI, and Amy B. Limbacher (Jon) of Austin, TX; stepchildren Michael Holdeman (Molly) of Greenville, NC, and Karen Tellez (Miguel) of Round Rock, TX; and grandchildren Sydney Parker, Bryce Limbacher, Louis Chavarria, and Noah, Ella, and Clara Holdeman.
Bill was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church. Because of his strong belief in God and devotion to family, church and community, his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
